May is coming to a close, Memorial Day has passed, the official start of summer is underway—so it must be time for another month-end roundup of the latest franchisor news. We promise to use these updates to give you the most useful information and a heads up on future trends. Presented by Proven Match, here is some of what has occurred over the past month in the world of franchise news.
A Pause to Remember
Because we’re fresh off Memorial Day and we pause to remember the honor and sacrifice of our veterans, we begin with an uplifting update from a franchise called Dream Vacations. Dream Vacations, a CruiseOne Company is owned in part by World Travel Holdings, an award-winning leisure travel company. According to VetFran, Dream Vacation is one of the most military-friendly franchise opportunities. In conjunction with Military Spouse magazine, they recently ran a contest in which they awarded one of their franchises free of charge to a worthy veteran. The winners were Stacy and Rob Evans, a Major in the U.S. Army from Fredericksburg, Va.
With the opening of their 400th location, McAlister’s Deli just passed an amazing milestone. Known for their fast -casual fare and remarkable baked potato selection, McAlister’s is on the move, having opened the doors to their 400th location in Cedar Hill, Texas—a suburb of Dallas. In the last fiscal year, McAlister’s has opened 33 new franchise locations and are looking to capitalize on future success with their customer first attitude.
Coming and Goings…
In related franchise-based restaurant news, TGI Fridays has elevated Aslam Khan as their new CEO. The former leader of Falcon Holdings, LLC will run the 470-chain group with an eye for collaboration. According to an article on Franchising.com, Khan remarked, “I manage by consent. I talk to the franchisees and sell the ideas to them. My job is to help them understand where we are coming from.” On the opposite end of the spectrum, the co-founder of Chuy’s Mexican Restaurants is heading for the easy chair and an occasional fishing excursion. Michael Young, co-founder of the iconic brand, is retiring, leaving the sole leadership up to his other co-founder, John Zapp. Upon reflecting on the change, Young stated, “We have built a unique culture at Chuy's, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with a team as passionate as I am in furthering the vision of Chuy's potential.”
