Crystal Ball: Franchising’s Hottest Categories in 2017

It’s the final week of 2016 and Christmas is officially over. While you might not be reporting back to the office until after the New Year, Proven Match is still hard at work researching what may be franchising’s hottest categories in 2017. We’re going to take a look into our very own crystal ball to bring you industry research into which particular categories should flourish next year.

While we don’t pretend to be an all-seeing oracle, we can report that our research indicates there does seem to be a consensus out there on which franchise categories will lead the way in 2017. And the examples closely mirror the top-performers during this past fiscal year. If you want to know which franchise categories will retain their strength in 2017, place your bets on quick-service restaurants (QSR), fitness centers, hair care & salons and cleaning services.

Each of these four franchise categories routinely shows up in the reports of franchises, which do well in any type of economy. After all, even when times are bad, people still need to eat and to get their hair cut. Cleaning services remain in demand and the country is still going through a wave of additional fitness crazes.

While it’s too early to tell what the markets and economy will do in 2017—though there are plenty of opinions—there are some specific franchise brands that have shown their strength in leading each of the aforementioned categories. For example, 2016’s hottest brand, Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches, is predicted to once again lead the pack. It’s low priced entry level, coupled with its dynamic ad campaign, has kept the “Freaky Fast” crew at the top of the charts. Sandwiches continue to resonate with the buying public because Subway is also predicted to do well in 2017.

Supercuts and Sport Clips should see another banner year in 2017, due in part to their service-oriented model which ensures fast and quality hair care services. The fact that most franchise locations are run as a semi-absentee owner model make them an attractive business proposition for franchisees wishing to keep their day jobs.

ServPro leads the cleaning category among franchises. They accomplished some outstanding brand work over the past few years. From their lime-green truck and van ensembles to their unforgettable business tagline, “Like it Never Happened”, ServPro will continue to dominate a category that should see no slowdown in 2017.

In the health and wellness category, Anytime Fitness currently leading the pack. No doubt these locations will continue to take advantage of more and more Americans wanting to get into—and stay in—shape. The beginning of a new year is typically the time when most of the health and wellness categories see an amazing uptick in memberships and sign ups. Wonder why that is? You guessed it, new year’s resolutions. Let’s hope for their sake, they stick to them this year.
