Meteorological summer is almost over, as September dawns at the end of this week. It was a red-hot summer for franchisor news and Proven Match is here to cull the best headlines from the month of August. In case you weren’t paying close attention, here’s some of what you might have missed:
Shoney’s Marketing Gimmick Hits “Totality”
Just one week ago, the United States experienced a total solar eclipse over North America for the first time since 1979. Well-known franchisor Shoney’s got in on the action with a clever offer. The fast casual outlet offered patrons who purchased a meal with a pair of eclipse glasses to view the celestial phenomenon. In addition, Shoney’s threw in a free “Moon Pie” treat to boot! Those not purchasing food could still score a pair of glasses for the low, low price of $3.
H&R Block Updates CEO
Franchisor H&R Block, the largest tax preparation company in the U.S., has updated their CEO position by hiring Jeff Jones away from the troubled Uber ride-sharing company. H&R Block is the largest tax prep franchise by far, with $3.28 billion in sales in 2016 and 11,950 units from coast to coast. It’s likely Jones will experience a much quieter tenure at the helm of the franchise giant, leaving behind several problems which continue to plague the star-crossed Uber.
Arby’s Gets Medieval
Fast casual chain and franchise giant Arby’s is getting in on the phenomenon known as popular culture and coupling it with a new twist on an old favorite—the Smoked Turkey Leg! In a whip-smart marketing move, Arby’s has jumped on the cable show sensation Game of Thrones to offer turkey legs to its customer base. Debuting under the pretext phrase, “Turkey is Coming”, the restaurant chain intends to offer the delicacies in select markets throughout this fall, as the weather turns cooler and many Renaissance Festivals kick in. Marketing genius? You better believe it…
Save the Date!
In conference-related news, there is an upcoming expo you may be interested in attending. On November 13-15, 2017 at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, you can attend the Restaurant Finance & Development Conference. The Restaurant Finance & Development Conference focuses on the “business” side of restaurants and is heavily attended by restaurant company owners and executives. This expo is known as the restaurant “dealmakers” event—and the networking opportunities are said to be second-to-none.
